The short version
Shopify now supports product discovery across several AI shopping experiences. The common foundation is structured, current product data, but the channels do not all work the same way.
- ChatGPT currently acts as a discovery-focused referrer for eligible Shopify merchants. Customers complete the purchase in the merchant's online store checkout, either inside an in-app browser or in a new browser tab.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini use Google Merchant Center for product discovery. Shopify-powered direct checkout is rolling out to eligible U.S.-based stores and U.S. customers.
- Microsoft Copilot can use Shopify Catalog for product discovery and offer Shopify-powered direct checkout to eligible U.S. customers.
- Meta surfaces, including Muse when available, can use Shopify Catalog and offer direct checkout in supported markets.
Availability, requirements and channel behavior can change. Review the live channel pages in Shopify Admin before making an operational decision.
What Shopify Catalog does
Shopify Catalog is a structured source of product information from eligible products sold on Shopify. Supported services can use fields such as title, description, image, price, options and availability to understand and surface products.
Eligible products are included automatically. That does not mean every product will appear in a particular answer, rank in a particular position or display on every connected channel. The destination platform controls the final ranking, wording and shopping experience.
The practical implication is simple: treat product information as operating data. Keep it accurate, complete and synchronized before looking for a special “AI optimization” shortcut.
Channel comparison
| Channel | Product discovery source | Purchase path | Selected requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog for eligible products; open-web discovery can also exist | Merchant's Shopify checkout in an in-app browser or new tab | Store must sell to U.S. customers; products must be eligible for Shopify Catalog; required store policies must be completed; prohibited products are excluded |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Google Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube channel, another provider or manual feed | Shopify-powered direct checkout where eligible, or redirect to the online store | Direct checkout is rolling out; store must be U.S.-based and sell to U.S. customers; Merchant Center and policy requirements apply |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Shopify-powered direct checkout where eligible, or redirect to the online store | Store must sell to U.S. customers; products must be Catalog-eligible; some products, checkout blocks and delivery methods are unsupported in direct checkout |
| Meta surfaces | Shopify Catalog; Meta channel product syncing is also required for shoppable ads | Shopify-powered direct checkout where eligible, or redirect to the online store | Must sell to the U.S., Canada or Mexico for direct checkout; some products and checkout features are unsupported |
This table is a dated operating summary, not a substitute for the current terms or Shopify Admin eligibility status.
Step 1: Confirm Shopify Catalog eligibility
Shopify's current public requirements include:
- The store complies with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.
- The store is generally on the Starter plan or higher and is not private, subject to the documented Agentic-plan exception.
- Each product has a title and at least one image.
- The product price is greater than zero.
- The product is published to an eligible channel.
- The product has an identifiable URL.
- The product is not unlisted, hidden from search engines or sensitive content.
- The account maintains appropriate security, business verification, operating history and policy standing.
Eligibility is reviewed over time. Fixing one field does not necessarily make a store immediately eligible.
Step 2: Improve the product record
For ten priority products, check:
- Title: Does it identify the actual product and meaningful variation?
- Description: Does it explain use, material, size, compatibility, care and limitations?
- Images: Are they accurate, useful and matched to variants?
- Organization: Are vendor, type, collections and tags consistent?
- Identifiers: Is a real barcode, GTIN, UPC, ISBN or MPN supplied when one exists?
- Variants: Are option names and values clear?
- Price and availability: Do the page, catalog and connected feed agree?
- Policies: Can the channel find current return, refund, privacy and terms information?
Do not invent attributes or identifiers. Completeness helps only when the information is true.
Step 3: Understand channel controls
Shopify's agentic storefront settings let an authorized merchant manage AI-channel participation. The store owner should review:
- Whether Shopify is managing channel settings automatically.
- Which channels can access product data.
- Whether direct checkout is active where supported.
- Whether required supplemental terms have been read and accepted.
- Whether the business can support the channel's product, policy, market and checkout requirements.
Turning off Shopify Catalog access for one agentic channel does not remove a product from Shopify Catalog itself. Shopify also warns that a product may still be referenced through other discovery methods, such as web crawling and indexing.
Step 4: Audit checkout dependencies before enabling direct checkout
Direct checkout can differ from the online-store checkout. Before relying on it, identify anything essential that depends on:
- Product bundles or subscriptions.
- Product customization.
- Client-side pixels.
- Custom checkout fields.
- Upsells, loyalty or rewards blocks.
- Pickup, local delivery or pickup points.
- Required customer sign-in.
- Consent capture inside a checkout block.
Shopify's current channel pages list several of these as unsupported or limited for direct checkout. A merchant should test the actual eligible experience before assuming that online-store customizations will appear.
Step 5: Adapt measurement
Direct checkout can create analytics gaps. Shopify says that Google Analytics and custom client-side pixels do not fire in the direct checkout for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot or Meta. Those checkouts use server-to-server checkout events instead.
Build reporting from the records that are actually available:
- Shopify order channel or referrer attribution.
- Agentic storefront performance insights in Shopify.
- Google Merchant Center diagnostics and product status for Google's channel.
- Shopify Knowledge Base query logs when your store has begun appearing in AI shopping conversations.
- Landing-page analytics for channels that redirect to the online store.
- Customer-service questions or returns that reveal inaccurate product information.
Do not combine discovery, checkout and sales into one metric. A product can be eligible but receive no impressions; receive impressions but no click; or produce an order without the same browser analytics as the online-store checkout.
Step 6: Use Shopify Knowledge Base as a learning loop
Shopify's Knowledge Base app can show questions asked in AI shopping conversations after products begin appearing. Its query log can classify questions as answered or unanswered and identify the source used for an answer.
Use unanswered questions to improve:
- Product descriptions.
- Shipping and return policies.
- Sizing, compatibility and care instructions.
- Store FAQs.
- Comparisons and product-selection guidance.
Do not create unsupported claims simply because a question is common. Add accurate answers that the store can operationally honor.
A safe launch checklist
- Confirm Catalog eligibility for the store and five priority products.
- Complete Terms, Privacy and Return and refund policies.
- Verify product titles, images, prices, availability and URLs.
- Add valid identifiers and clear variant data where applicable.
- Review Agentic storefront settings in Shopify Admin.
- Read the supplemental terms before the owner accepts them.
- Confirm market eligibility for each channel.
- Document unsupported checkout features that affect the store.
- Decide whether direct checkout or redirect is operationally appropriate.
- Confirm attribution and reporting sources.
- Review Knowledge Base questions when data becomes available.
- Recheck official sources before changing channel settings.
What this does not promise
Catalog eligibility is not placement. Complete data is not a ranking guarantee. Channel access is not the same as direct-checkout availability. The useful goal is to improve eligibility, accuracy, decision support and measurement while the platforms continue to evolve.
Next step
Run the AI Search Readiness Checklist on five priority products. Fix critical eligibility, policy and data gaps before expanding to the full catalog.
